If you are researching home insurance, you might see the name Avantia Group. Avantia is a highly advanced, technology-driven Managing General Agent (MGA). However, they do not trade under the name Avantia when selling directly to the public. Instead, their products are distributed through their award-winning, direct-to-consumer brand: Homeprotect.
Avantia’s superpower is its use of artificial intelligence and millions of data points to underwrite "non-standard" properties and customers. Where traditional high-street insurers use generic systems that automatically reject complex risks, Avantia’s proprietary technology allows Homeprotect to instantly quote for over 97% of the UK market - including homes with subsidence, previous flooding, or customers with financial and legal complications.

What type of home insurance do they provide?
Through the Homeprotect brand, Avantia provides highly flexible cover. While they offer fantastic insurance for "standard" brick-and-tile homes, they truly excel in the non-standard market.
Buildings & Contents Insurance
Avantia policies (via Homeprotect) provide a robust foundation of cover, backed by a 5 Star Rating from independent financial experts.
-
Buildings Limits: They typically provide up to £1 million in rebuilding cover as standard, saving you from worrying about exact rebuild calculations.
-
Trace and Access: Essential cover to find the source of a hidden water leak is included to help minimise destructive exploratory costs.
-
Contents Limits: Flexible limits tailored to the value of your possessions, replacing most items on a new-for-old basis.
The "Non-Standard" Specialists
Avantia’s technology is built specifically to say "yes" when other insurers say "no". They provide instant online cover for:
-
Empty Properties: Specialist cover for unoccupied homes (whether waiting for probate, undergoing renovations, or between tenants).
-
High Flood & Subsidence Risk: Because Avantia uses hyper-local data, they can offer competitive quotes for properties located in high-risk flood zones or homes that have previously been underpinned due to subsidence.
-
Complex Backgrounds: Homeprotect is one of the very few brands that will instantly underwrite customers with poor credit histories, bankruptcies (IVAs), or unspent criminal convictions.
-
Non-Standard Construction: Cover for eco-homes, timber frames, flat roofs, and listed buildings.
Built-In Extras
Unlike many budget policies, the standard Homeprotect policy comes with Basic Legal Expenses and a 24/7 Home Emergency line included as standard, rather than forcing you to pay an extra premium for them.
How Avantia calculates premiums
Traditional insurers price risk using basic postcode blocks. Avantia does things entirely differently, using their proprietary, AI-driven technology platform called Cortex:
-
Granular Data: Cortex uses over 5 billion data points to assess your home individually. This means if your neighbour’s house flooded but yours is situated slightly higher up the hill, Avantia can calculate a fairer, lower premium for you rather than blanketing the whole postcode.
-
The Specific Risk: If you have an unspent criminal conviction or an empty property, your premium will naturally be higher than a standard risk, but Avantia ensures it is priced accurately rather than issuing a blanket decline.
-
Underwriting Panel: While Avantia Group acts as the MGA pricing the risk, the financial backing and final premium are supported by major partners, predominantly AXA Insurance.
Avantia home insurance reviews
Because Avantia trades directly to the consumer as Homeprotect, you have to look at Homeprotect’s reviews to get an accurate picture of their customer service.
-
Trustpilot: Homeprotect boasts an Excellent rating on Trustpilot, consistently scoring highly based on tens of thousands of reviews. Customers frequently praise how easy it is to get cover online for situations (like renovations or empty homes) that usually require hours of phone calls with other brokers.
-
Smart Money People: They frequently win awards for their customer service, recently being recognised in the top tier for protecting vulnerable customers and offering fair claims handling.
-
Defaqto & Moneyfacts: Their core policy holds a strong 5 Star Rating, verifying that the wording is robust, comprehensive, and lacks hidden nasty exclusions.
How to get an Avantia (Homeprotect) quote
You can buy Avantia's products directly via the Homeprotect website or through major price comparison platforms. Because their AI system is so advanced, you can usually get a quote for a complex risk in under a minute online.
However, if you have a non-standard property, it is crucial not to rely on just one provider. Other specialist brokers may have access to bespoke schemes that can rival or beat Avantia's algorithmic pricing.
At Money Helpdesk, our home insurance experts have access to a wide panel of specialist underwriters. If you are looking to arrange robust cover for your unique property or circumstances, get in touch and we will present you with your best options.
FAQs
Homeprotect has a very transparent fee structure. Unlike many competitors, they do not charge a specific "cancellation fee". If you cancel within the 14-day cooling-off period, you get a full refund. If you cancel after 14 days, you will receive a pro-rata refund for the unused time; however, they will not refund the initial "arrangement fee" you paid to set up the policy.
