About Chesham Building Society's Legacy
Founded in 1845 in the market town of Chesham, Buckinghamshire, the society held a unique distinction: at the time of its merger, it was the oldest surviving building society in the world.
For 165 years, it operated as a small, traditional mutual, primarily serving members in Buckinghamshire and the surrounding Home Counties.Despite its historic status, the financial pressures of the post-2008 economic climate made it difficult for small societies to operate efficiently.
In 2010, the board agreed to a voluntary merger with the much larger Skipton Building Society to secure the long-term future of its members' funds.

Not critically. Unlike some other mergers of that era, the Chesham merger was described as a "strategic" move rather than a rescue. However, like many small societies, it faced squeezing profit margins and high regulatory costs, making a merger the safest long-term option.
