For over 20 years, CNG (Contract Natural Gas) was one of the UK’s leading independent suppliers, specifically known for its deep roots in the commercial gas market. However, following the unprecedented energy crisis of late 2021, CNG ceased trading. While the CNG brand no longer operates as an active supplier, its legacy continues through the customers now managed by Pozitive Energy and the ongoing shift toward renewable gas solutions.
If your business was originally with CNG, or if you are looking for a supplier that mirrors their independent, customer-first spirit, understanding this transition is key to managing your current utilities.

What Happened to CNG?
In November 2021, CNG Energy Limited (and its electricity arm) collapsed due to record-high wholesale energy prices. As part of Ofgem’s Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) process, Pozitive Energy was appointed to take over CNG’s 41,000 non-domestic customers.
-
A Seamless Transition: Ofgem ensured that all gas and electricity supplies continued without interruption.
-
Credit Protection: Unlike many business collapses where credit balances are lost, Pozitive Energy was one of the few suppliers that agreed to honour credit balances for former CNG customers
-
Licence Revocation: CNG’s supply licences were officially revoked in 2021, and the company moved into Creditors' Voluntary Liquidation by late 2023
Business Energy Options via Pozitive Energy
If you were moved from CNG to Pozitive Energy, you are now part of a tech-led supplier that focuses on absolute transparency. Their current offerings include:
1. Fixed and Flexible Tariffs
-
Fixed Term: Most former CNG customers were initially placed on Deemed rates before being offered 1, 2, or 3-year fixed contracts. These provide the budget certainty that CNG was originally known for
-
Bespoke Pricing: Pozitive Energy uses a proprietary Can-Do software platform to offer highly competitive, real-time pricing based on your business’s specific half-hourly usage
2. Digital-First Management
-
The Pozitive Portal: Much like CNG’s early adoption of online tools, Pozitive Energy offers a comprehensive dashboard where businesses can view invoices, submit meter readings, and track carbon emissions in one place
Sustainable Energy Services
Since the transition, the focus for former CNG customers has shifted toward the 2030 Net Zero targets. Pozitive Energy (and other specialist providers in the sector) now offer:
-
100% Renewable Electricity: Standard for many new contracts, ensuring your business energy comes from wind, solar, or hydro
-
Carbon Offsetting: For gas users, programs are available to offset the carbon footprint of your natural gas consumption through verified environmental projects
-
Smart Meter Rollouts: A major pusis the replacement of old CNG-era analogue meters with SMETS2 smart meters to eliminate estimated billing once and for all
The Procurement Process: Managing Your Move
If you are currently on a Deemed or Out-of-Contract rate following the CNG collapse, here is how to secure a better deal:
-
Check Your Current Supplier: Confirm if you are still with Pozitive Energy or if your contract has since been moved
-
Request a Quote: You will need your MPAN (for electricity) or MPRN (for gas) numbers, which can be found on your latest bill
-
Compare the Market: Because the Big Six and newer green suppliers are competing for former CNG customers, you may find significantly better rates by looking at market averages
-
Confirm the Switch: Once you sign a new contract, your new supplier will handle the termination of your old deemed agreement
